Radio broadcasting began in 1939. The first station, VP5PZ, was made possible through the use of the equipment of a local 'ham' operator named John Grinan, who, in compliance with wartime regulations, handed his equipment over to the Government.

Mr. Grinan succeeded in convincing the Government to use his equipment to operate a public broadcasting station; and the amateur equipment was adapted to the demands of broadcasting, and regular scheduled broadcasts began on November 17, 1939, using Mr. Grinads call-sign, VP5PZ.

Initially, there was one broadcast per week, lasting one hour from Mr. Grinan's home at 2 Seaview Avenue, St Andrew; but after May 1, 1940, a small staff was employed and daily broadcasts began on June 3, 1940.

Few companies in Jamaica today can trace their origins back to 1834. The Gleaner Company Limited is one of these. The Gleaner Company, founded by the brothers Jacob and Joshua deCordova, was established in 1834.

Its first publication was a four-page weekly newspaper, issued on Saturday, September 13, 1834 as an octavio-sized weekly paper. Today, it is a multi-sectioned broad sheet newspaper which is published daily.

The Gleaner was first located at 66 West Harbour Street, Downtown Kingston but soon moved to 156 Harbour Street where it expanded to include a semi-weekly country and fortnightly overseas edition.

The "Tourism Enhancement Act, 2004," passed by Parliament in December 2004 and subsequently revised in October 2011, provided the legal basis for the establishment of a mechanism for the collection of a small fee from incoming airline and cruise passengers.

Specifically, the Act allows for:

  • A Tourism Enhancement Fee of US$20.00 to be charged to incoming airline passengers and US$2.00 to be charged to cruise passengers.
  • The monies collected are paid into a dedicated Tourism Enhancement Fund.

The Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) was established on May 1, 2005 for the sole purpose of implementing the recommendations emanating from the Master Plan for Sustainable Tourism Development, 2002.
